Arashi’s Nino and NewS’s Ryo in “Ryusei no Kizuna”

Posted in TV, Tokyo with tags , , , on July 23, 2008 by illdielaughing

The drama adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s novel Ryusei no Kizuna is set to air this fall with Johnny’s boys Kazunari Ninomya (Letters From Iwo Jima), Erika Toda (MisaMisa from Death Note) and Nishikido Ryo (Attention Please!) taking the roles of siblings.

(Is anyone else frightened by the control of Johnny’s Entertainment in Japan?) The story is about three orphan siblings, two boys (the older played by Kazunari Ninomiya) and one girl (played by Erika Toda), that become a team of Robin Hood wannabes that steal money from the rich. Their parents were murdered when they were younger and their formative years were filled with deception and lies so they have sworn to avenge the death of their parents. One day the two brothers have found the murderers, but they find that the people responsible might be much closer to home….

This drama is starting to interest me. I really like Ninomiya as an actor and I think Nishikido is adorable so I won’t mind watching him (unless he sucks). Looking forward to this drama to start airing this October on Fridays at 10pm on TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting Station).

Big Bang on Change

Big Bang on Good Sunday’s Change. If you love Big Bang, not watching this is a sin.

This made me really like Lee Hyori and it is seriously the funniest Big Bang video I have ever seen. Ji Yong and Seung Ri put on prosthetic make-up and trick the other members by posing as directors on a shoot for their concert’s special video. This episode also made me really appreciate Seung Ri’s absurdness, he’s so funny in this episode. Kang In is also in this episode but I didn’t recognize him until part four, is it just me or did he gain some weight? The other part after the jump. Read more »

Japan’s “Mawang” and the Hallyu Wave

Posted in TV, Tokyo with tags , on July 5, 2008 by illdielaughing

Japan’s Mawang is a Johnny’s Entertainment love fest. Ohno of Arashi, Ikuta Toma (still a Johnny’s junior) and some model Kobayashi Ryoko.

I don’t doubt their acting ability but they have to do a lot to live up to the roles that Joo Ji Hoon and Uhm Tae Woong filled. I also just find the idea of these young-looking actors filling these roles slightly off. Ikuta Toma plays a detective but he’s only 23, as much as I enjoy watching him act he’s completely miscast to play a detective at his age. I know that when a movie or drama or anything is remade, you should never really expect it to be true to the original. It is now it’s own entity. (Like Infernal Affairs and The Departed, they are both great movies, but they are completely different films, the only similarities are the few plot points they share and they differ so greatly because they concern two completely different cultures: Irish-Americans and Mobs in Boston, and the triad in  Hong Kong.) So, I figure they changed the script accordingly and the drama will be very different from the original. But I still find Ikuta Toma playing a detective to be absurd. And the girl that plays Shin Min Ah’s role is only 18. (This is one of the things that bothers me about Japanese dramas sometimes, the pull of Johnny’s Entertainment and the obsession with youth). The Absolute BullSh*t that is “On Air” Episode 21

Posted in Seoul, TV with tags , on July 1, 2008 by illdielaughing

Aigoo… I have the problem I’m about to talk about with a lot of Korean dramas and it is no doubt a cultural difference. (Note: this might not make sense if you haven’t watched any of the series).

Big Bang’s Solo Shizz

Posted in Movies, Music, Seoul, TV with tags on July 1, 2008 by illdielaughing

•Tae Yang’s been solo for a while, blowing it up with his album, HOT.
•Dae Sung is set to star in the musical Cats and he also released a trot single called Look at Me, Gwi Sun.
•G-Dragon has released a digital single, Look Only At Me Part 2 which is a reworking of his fellow member Tae Yang’s Look Only At Me. G-Dragon can do much better that a remix, and he will, his mini-album is coming out sometime this summer.
•TOP has been an actor since his stint in I Am Sam, and now he’s been doing a lot of modeling and shall be taking his turn as an international man of mystery, or really just an assassin, in next year’s Lee Byung Hun drama, IRIS.
•Seung Ri is has been acting in a musical and he’ll be debuting in his first film, set to be released in November, called 우리집에 왜왔니 or Why Did You Come to Our House? I’ve never really liked Seung Ri, even before his tasteless comments, he always just annoyed me, so I’m not really looking forward to his film debut (not to say that I don’t hope he does well). What I am looking forward to in Why Did You Come To Our House? is Kang Hye Jung (Old Boy, I Came in Search of a Flower) who plays the lead role of a woman still enraptured by the memory of her first love and high school sweetheart. Playing opposite Kang Hye Jung is Park Hee Soon (Invasive Inquiry Agency) as a widower with dementia. Anyway, I hope Seung Ri does better than So Hee did in her debut (she wasn’t bad but there was lots of hype for no reason).

Iljimae Makes Fun of Na Hoon Ah

Posted in Seoul, TV with tags , on July 1, 2008 by illdielaughing

Remember that old singer, Na Hoon A, that was accused of being threatened by the mob and getting his junk cut off because of it? Remember how he tried to take off his pants to prove he had a penis?

Well, Lee Jun Ki’s drama Iljimae remembers and the producers decided to make fun of that moment in the show. According to KBS Global:

In the June 26th episode, a high-ranking official named Byeon Shik summons his men to the meeting room and storms at them for humiliating him. When his men feign ignorance, the enraged Byeon Shik jumps onto the table, takes off his official robe, pretends to take off his pants and yells, “Do I have to take off my clothes to prove to you just how serious I am?”

I don’t particularly find it in good taste, but it is a bit funny. I also think it’s funny that KBS Global calls it a parody. That very well may be the correct word to use but I feel like if your making fun of real people then it’s just blatant mockery.

What’s Up, Fox?

Posted in Seoul, TV, ^_^ with tags , on June 29, 2008 by illdielaughing

I’m not entirely sure why this drama is called What’s Up, Fox?, but I think they made a reference to it in one of the episodes.

What’s Up, Fox? is the story of Go Byung Hee, a 33 year-old that lives with her mom and works at an adult magazine, and her love with Park Chul Soo, the younger brother of her best friend and friend of the family. Chul Soo is nine years younger than Byung Hee so that of course causes a big rift in their relationship. But their age difference is nothing compared to the one between Byung Hee’s younger sister, Jun Hee, and the object of her affection. Jun Hee is a model and she meets the extremely rich, extremely irritable fashion importer. He’s 17 years older than her. At first she hated him and she hated that he wanted to be her sponsor. But as we know love can quickly spring from hate. Byung Hee on the other hand has always loved Chul Soo, but as a brother. After Chul Soo’s parents died, Byung Hee’s mother was like a mother to him and his older sister (Byung Hee’s best friend), Seung Hye. Anyway, we know how these dramas go, things come in between them, including themselves but the ride is joyful and hilarious. And the leads are so great to watch. Go Byung Hee being played by the adorable Go Hyun Jung, famous since her appearance in one of the highest rated dramas of all time, Sandglass. And Park Chul Soo is played by the equally adorable Chun Jung Myung, who I adore.

Watch this! It’s not perfect but it’s worth it.

“S-Diary” Cast on Come To Play

Posted in Seoul, TV with tags , , on June 29, 2008 by illdielaughing

There is very little subbed video of Gong Yoo so this is a nice treat.

Gong Yoo, Kim Sun Ah and Kim Soo Roh on Yoo Jae Suk’s Come To Play. This is a rather old episode, it aired in October of 2004 to promote the movie S-Diary. The movie is basically about Kim Sun Ah going back and reading her diaries to figure out what went wrong about her the 3 loves in her life. Funny movie but nothing to call home about. But this episode is funny, though a bit short.

Thanks to yonnieyonnie for the subs!

Jun Jin on Infinity Challenge

Posted in Seoul, TV with tags , , , on June 26, 2008 by illdielaughing

Infinity Challenge’s resident crackhead, Noh Hong Chul was especially cracktastic in this episode but I wouldn’t have him any other way.

The Chairman, equipped with creepy stuffed cat straddling his arm, tells the Infinity Challenge guys that he has bonuses ready for one of them. Their are six suitcases, one of them has the $3,000 bonus in it. The first person to go to some bathhouse, retrieve the suitcase and bring it somewhere else will win the money (if theirs is the suitcase with the money in it).
When they get to some station the have to say “I love you, how can your love change?” to someone in sunglasses so that they can get the password for the locked briefcases.

Thus hilarity ensues. Read more »

TOP and Lee Byung Hun; Hunter and the Hunted in IRIS

Posted in Seoul, TV, ^_^ with tags , , on June 24, 2008 by illdielaughing

I think when most Americans see the word “iris” in all capitals (IRIS) we can’ help but think of the bloody IRS and then we get cold sweats.

Anyway, Big Bang’s resident actor and rapper, TOP, is starring along side Lee Byung Hun in the high-budget, high profile drama, IRIS. The drama, set to air early next year, involves the secret organization, IRIS, that sends TOP’s character, an assassin, to kill Lee Byung Hun’s. IRIS is based in the states so there will be lots of overseas filming in America but also in Russia, China and Japan.

I’ve never seen TOP act, minus the NG’s from I am Sam, so I’m curious to see how he’ll do in what looks to be a high-octane drama. If he was chosen to work along side Lee Byung Hun and directors Kang Jae Gyu, of war movie Taeguki and Lee Hyung Min, of sob-drama I’m Sorry, I Love You, then he must have been rather impressive.

Not much else is known about the drama as they won’t starting shooting until the end of this year, much of their overseas filming being done in October.
