My Last Will and Testament

big-bang_number-1

I just posted this on soompi, against my better judgement. G-Dragon, in the picture above is saying, “SHH! You shouldn’t have said anything!”

I think I’m going to offend some people with this comment so i’ll just preface it by saying “Sorry.”
Anyway, I love Big Bang but they are not the second coming and they are not the hottest thing to come out of Korea, especially not in terms of hiphop. This “new genre” of music Big Bang showed is not new, it’s called pop music. Kanye and G-Dragon are not on the same level, lets not even go there.
Seriously I do like Big Bang, Hot Issue was a fresh minialbum and thats why I love them but I think their latest Korean album is a jarble of techno and hiphop beats for the most part. They aren’t really a hiphop group anymore, they’re a pop group that wears hipster hiphop-ish clothing and is heavily influenced by hiphop, rap etc.

I’m not really offended to hear you call American hiphop a joke so much as confused because if you listen to shi.tty music then it’s going to be a joke. If you listen to some good American hiphop then maybe you’ll realize that it’s not America’s “fault”, but yours for listening to Flo Rida when you could be listening to Lupe Fiasco, Pharell Williams, The Neptunes, Gnarles Barkley ETC I sound harsh but there’s no other way to put it frankly.

Also, you do realize that Big Bang has sang and rapped about maybe 3 different things since they’ve debuted? Breaking up, sex and… money… Honestly, I really cant stand when people try to put down the American industry because they can’t find good music in it.

ANYWAY, here’s why I like Big Bang
They have good music for the most part (recently they’ve been slipping)
They have good singers and good rappers
Did I mention they have good rappers? In pop music in Korea thats a rarity
They can dance and they aren’t afraid of women lol

And here are some pictures of nice looking things so that you all don’t come looking for me and tar and feather me.

I know I shouldn’t have but sometimes I read something that irks me so much I must respond. Anyway, in lieu of this I’ve decided to write my last will and testament because I know…they will find me.
To Amy, at Popfestast, I leave this blog.
To Ellie, I leave the camera we use to shoot Seoulbeats Weekly (don’t forget to give it back to NYU before Winter break!).
To the VIPs I’ve offended I leave my scratched and tirelessly listened to Hot Issue mini-album. I also leave my The Great Concert DVD.
To my readers, I leave my itunes playlist.

“Red Sunset” for you

Posted in Music, Seoul with tags on November 5, 2008 by illdielaughing

Soooo. Big Bang is blowing it up right now. 200,000 pre-orders and happy-go-lucky music video.

Basically, I like the video but the song is rather boring. Happy though but I really don’t feel it the way I felt their older music.

The guys looks great and are cute and all that good stuff, and I’m happy they’re drawing attention to the beach and are doing nice things, but all these things, for me, are separate from their music.  I like that their image is where it used to be but I’d rather they still wore eye-liner and gave me a better title song.

Anyway, I won’t make complete judgments yet, I still have to listen to the rest of the album. I’m doing a track-by-track review here and another op-ed with Amy, when we both get our shit together. But this is what I wrote on SB.

Big Bang and the Second album

Posted in Music, Seoul on October 29, 2008 by illdielaughing

The teaser is beautifully photographed but it’s stupid. I just want them to shut up and they’re not even talking. (Has anyone noticed how hostile I’ve been lately? LOL. I’m just a severely disappointed Kpop lover).

So… Big Bang’s Remember is coming out in a week…

1. INTRO - 모두 다 소리쳐 (Everybody Scream)
2. 오, 아, 오 (Oh, Ah, Oh)
3. Sunset Glow
4. 반짝반짝 (Sparkling, Sparkling)
5. STRONG BABY (Seungri SOLO)
6. WONDERFUL
7. Foolish Love
8. Haru Haru (ACOUSTIC VERSION)
9. Lies [REMIX]
10. Last Farewell [REMIX]
11. REMEMBER

If this album sucks I will officially lose my faith in Big Bang. Sounds overly dramatic but I’ll basically stop expecting them to make good music. Anywho, the album has 7 new full length songs, 1 new intro and 2 remixes. I’m interested in seeing how they changed up the beats and harmonies of Haru Haru and Last Farewell. And I really want to listen to the full version of “Remember” because… I think it’s not…that…good. Read more »

Yunho Eats It

Hahaha.

I really needed to see Yunho eat it. He takes everything way too seriously and I enjoy watching him fail. Bwahaha. I love him though, I swear.

MKMF Might Get Interesting

MKMF is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary, so I am expecting the show to pull out all the stops this year. This could mean extreme absurdity, including a barage of pyrotechnics and seizure-inducing strobes in every corner, but we’ll see. I’m actually looking forward to this years awards.

Performers include Big Bang, DBSK, MC Mong, SHINee, Lee Hyori, Ivy (say what?), Super Junior, SS501, Battle, FT Island, Wonder Girls, Supernova, SNSD, SG Wannabe and Kim Dong Wan. Read more »

BoA Gets Fierce

Posted in Music, Seoul with tags on October 17, 2008 by illdielaughing

Oh man, the full version is so much better than the shorter version. Please release this one in the states!

BoA’s accent isn’t that hot but lets ignore that and pay attention to the amazing campyness of this music video and how win it is. Have I ever mentioned how much I love badass females? I probably have on numerous occasions. I hope BoA makes it if only because she is a great performer.

Things I like about this video
It’s in Korea and it looks awesome. The scenery is great and I think it’s especially important bringing that to America.
The plot has absolutely nothing to do with the song but that’s better because the songs lyrics are lame.
The plot of the mv is overused but they make it fresh here.
The panel of judges is so excellently perturbed. Their reactions are hilarious.

Things I don’t like
There is no reason that things need to be exploding.
They should stop repeating the dance moves, as hot as they are.
The video has absolutely nothing to do with the song…
The idea that they won’t use this when she releases this song in America. T_T

Is this video an ace?

A letter to G-Dragon

Posted in Seoul, ^_^ with tags on October 15, 2008 by illdielaughing

Dear G-Dragon,

If you dress like this again, I will never listen to your music or support Big Bang (Well, I will but this is a threat and I need some leverage). You look absurd and I hope you know that. Don’t let your fangirls fool you into thinking that you look “hot”. I used to want you to take me shopping, but now I feel you may just dress me up like a fruitcake or gothic teletubby.

                                          Sincerely,
                                                     Illdielaughing

P.S. I do like the boxers however.

Fashion Week in Seoul [Oct 18-25]

Posted in Fashion, Seoul on October 13, 2008 by illdielaughing

I’ve always enjoyed Korean street fashion more than what comes down the runway. And no, it’s not because I’ve seen one too many Andre Kim shows, it’s just that, though a bit conformed, street fashion is much more interesting than this:

What I love to see is people out an about taking what they see on the runways and improving on it:

Feetmanseoul

The mens wear collections will be finding their way down the runway October 18 and 19th, while the women’s wear walks from the 21st to the 25th. Hoping to see more color in Korean fashion this season (street or otherwise) and when I say color I do not mean in the form of a living brillo pad.

From The Korea Times:

Seoul Fashion Week begins with two days of men’s wear fashion shows. Men’s wear designers will include Chang Kwang-hyo, Park Jong-chul, Song Hye-myung, Park He-rin, Kim Seo-ryong, Song Zio, Park Sung-chul, Lee Ju-young and Seo Eun-gil.

The women’s wear fashion shows run for five days, with designers such as Song Jain, Gee Choon-hee, Lee Young-hee, An Yoon-jung and Cho Sung-kyong showing their spring and summer designs.

Will the Spring/Summer collections rolling out be worthwhile?
