I love the Teriyaki Boyz and this is a very, very, very recent love after watching their music videos for “Zock On!” (Featuring Pharell Williams and Busta Rhymes) and (the painfully low-budget) “I Still Love H.E.R” (featuring a confused Kanye West). They’re a hip-hop rap group on crack. Meaning, they’re campy, high-energy and tons of fun to watch with good music to boot.

M-flo’s frontman, Verbal, is a member of Teriyaki Boyz along with Ilmari and  Ryo-Z (Rip Slyme), WISE and Nigo, the DJ and the man who brought them together. The group has always had high profile artists producing tracks on their albums, including Kanye West, Daft Punk and the Neptunes (to name a few). They’re latest album “Serious Japanese” dropped in Japan at the end of January and last Monday in the States. I want it! Hopefully a track-by-track review will be coming up.

Oh “Gee”, what an SM creation

Posted in MV, Music, Music Video, Seoul with tags on January 7, 2009 by illdielaughing

SM has not let the saccharine sweet cute image die for SNSD. And they wouldn’t because it would be ridiculous to completely drop a groups concept just because it sucks. Gee is actually a rather cute, addictive song until they start with the high-pitched whining. Beware: after a while your ear will be leaking….something. Here’s the mv:

God, that horrible dancing puts those gorgeous pumps to shame. I hope their feet bled after daring to do such choreography in them. Just kidding, guys. The girls of Girls’ Generation continues to fuse cute with skimpy. Now skimpy is a strong word but I promise I mean to use that adjective in the least offensive way possible.

Pairing up the booty-shorts with cutesy dance moves that would be cute on a toddler is rather interesting to watch. It’s not remotely unexpected from SNSD. SNSD has become less blatant lolitas but they are still the mascots for the team.

Lil’ Kim and Se7en shoot the MV

And Lil’ Kim looks as if she’s been stuffed into a ripped up trash bag. Why does she look like that? Se7en looks spiffy in his suit and then Lil’ Kim looks like a lost extra from The Matrix, one that’s still looking for the set.

lil-kim_se7en_mv

This music video looks like a typical hip-hop, “hoes in da club” music video. Which disappoints me but I am just anxious to see it, so I won’t complain. But let it be on the record that I think Se7en should bring something new to the table. Though, if this is what he wants then I shouldn’t project my wants for Asians debuting here on him and assume that if he doesn’t do what I think he should that it’s some kind of failing. I think it’s lame that his video is typical ho-car-ho but, hey, I never really found him to be innovative in that respect anyway.

Moving on. They’re pictured here doing an interview for MTV which I’m anxious to see as well, if only to see Se7en on a normal channel (AKA not MTV Iggy). Things like this make me realize that maybe I should start looking for these crossover artists as a consumer of American music rather than as someone who will know everything thing they’re doing anyway because I blog about it. This way  I can see just how effective implanting themselves into the American market is.

Big Bang’s “Haru Haru” Music Video

Posted in MV, Music, Music Video, Seoul, ^_^ with tags on August 7, 2008 by illdielaughing

>.< I liked it but still >.<

Subbed

The Plot:
The girl in the video has terminal cancer so she pretends that she’s dating TOP so as not to burden her real boyfriend GD with her disease (ugh, haven’t we heard THAT one before). GD finally finds out what’s going on when Tae Yang calls him and tells him. He runs to the hospital while she’s having surgery but she, of course, dies. And GD sees her being  wheeled out (dead, mind you). TOP gives GD the ring that GD bought the dead girl (Because remember he was just acting). Aggravating plot but great execution.

The Bad:
Why in the heck are they wearing so much eyeliner? Relax on that guys.
Ji Yong, straight up, looks like a girl. The eyeliner is seriously absurd.
The fact that the girl is in the hospital… are you fucking kidding me? Has Big Bang completely lost their originality?
The song perfectly matched the video. Oh!The! Angst!

The Good:
The fight between TOP and G-Dragon is pretty intense. They look pretty damn serious.
The song fits the video really well.
The look of the video is great, the locations and (surprisingly) the acting was pretty good.
The ending was filmed so well that I didn’t mind the over used, death-of-girl-with-terminal-disease-that-makes-her-hair-fall-out, plot.

Let me reiterate, despite my complaining, I really liked this video. Can’t wait for the second one.

Super Junior Happy’s “PAJAMA PARTY!”

Posted in MV, Music, Music Video, Seoul with tags on August 5, 2008 by illdielaughing

I’m not positive that there should be an exclamation point at the end of the song title, but in my book any Super Junior Happy song should have such punctuation affixed to every other word.

Super Junior Happy’s second single Pajama Party is adorable and just as cracktastic as the confused Cooking? Cooking! I think Super Junior Happy should just be called Super Junior Crack Rock because I mean, seriously, what the hell is this? It’s crack induced fun for children. But it’s also strangely sexual, while absent of all sexuality. The song’s lyrics are about having a pajama party. The singer says we’ve already gotten that feel, why are you so stiff?/Wearing my pajamas, just the two of us, with much energy, let’s play. Whoa relax. At first I was thinking, you can’t have a bubblegum pop song talking about: Like they do in the movies/lets have a pillow fight/…with much energy let’s enjoy ourselves.

The Lyrics continue as: Afterwards when we get tired/it’d be time for me to capture the mood/there may even be some sly thoughts that sneak in… Hahahahahahahahaa Yeah, right. Then Eun Hyuk starts rapping about how his love is pure. Okay, I love you Eun Hyuk, but whatever. I love how SM has their mid twenties singers singing this kindergarten-like happyhappyjoyjoy music and then they have SHINee–with all of the members not even able to legally drink–belting out ballads and mature music.

I, most likely, will never like Super Junior; though I completely understand their appeal, it doesn’t work for me. I’m always completely flabbergasted when I watch their music videos. Even Don’t Don and U which I rather like, are rather beyond my appreciation (Don’t Don’s pelvic thrusting, U’s… well, pelvic thrusting). I’m not criticizing anyone that likes SuJu (unless you’re crazy, crazyface), but I just don’t think I’m going to get into them. Well, Super Junior Happy is obviously, obviously not for my demographic (18-25 and sane), but they would work for the younger set. (And anyone that has ever liked a Britney Spears song, I guess *lowers head* )

Epik High’s Umbrella MV

Posted in MV, Music, Music Video, Seoul with tags on July 24, 2008 by illdielaughing

Epik High has recently released the music video for their song Umbrella (ft. Younha)

Epik High always has interesting music videos, like the great video they had for their song Fan or their depressing video for One and the controversial, banned video for Breakdown. So I was expecting something really great and interesting. Though I think the MV’s for Breakdown and Fan were superior (the latter being the best) this video is very interesting in it’s own right. The concepts in the MV are good but some of them aren’t executed well enough. But the music video is still nice, the lyrics are beautiful, Yoonha’s voice is so great. Tablo’s uber bangs are also really great in this music video.

I love Epik High for the amount of quality music they produce and for the innovation behind what they do. No matter what it is, their music, their CD cover art, their music videos, they always do something interesting and thought provoking, very artistic. My favorite shot in this video is of Tablo being rained on in his apartment as he lays on his bed.

What do you think of Epik High’s Umbrella MV?

DBSK’s Purple Line PV: Behind-the-Scenes

Posted in Behind-the-Scenes, MV, Tokyo with tags on December 28, 2007 by illdielaughing

Well, sort of. (I do that alot don’t I?)

prpllne.jpg

This vid, thanks to xchocopiex from youtube, shows Yunho at the PV shoot for what I can only assume is Purple Line because 1) the video title said it and 2) he’s wearing a purple shirt. (My abilities of deduction are stunning.) The video, shot by a stalkerazzi lovely fan on December 18, is Yunho based but it does give you a little taste of what the video concept might be. Is it ugly/interesting purple shirts under black suits, dancing, a Hugo Boss supplied wardobe and Tokyo’s luscious night as the backdrop? Who knows? We’ll find out for sure when the PV comes out, in January. (The single is out January 16th)

About the vid:
How funny is it that the person who shot this is hiding behind a tree. She get’s an A for fitting the paparazzi role to a tee.
