Boys Over Flowers “News”

I’ve long since abandoned my hopes of being a “news” blog but it’s really funny to see the “current events” in Korean pop culture. It’s all “might haves” “would haves” and it’s pretty dull.

Kim So Eun, the actress that plays Ga Eul in Boys Over Flowers might have been a national skier.
DBSK would have been in BOF. (And I’m very happy that this never happened. Hyun Joong is enough in the bad-acting-from-idols department.)

Speaking of BOF, I really can’t believe that it broke the 30% Nielsen rating. That is completely nuts. I mean, I understand the show’s appeal, and I’ve watched all but the last 2 episodes but I just can’t imagine that nearly a third of the R.O.K watches this show. That’s NUTS. Okay. I’m done with that. When/IF I start watching the show again I’ll share some more of my opinions on the plot and what not. Though really, I find it hard to find the contrived plot very interesting. I mean it’s based on a manga, so it’s allowed to be ridiculous but then they make it melo-dramatic, swath the scenes in horrid music and call it sentimental. Read more »

Kgot Boda Namja * Boys Before Flowers: Take Two

Man, this drama is the thing that’s really not good for young minds, forget about Mirotic.

Of course, if you watch Korean dramas long enough you get used to seeing the rampant sexist attitudes towards women. Women are more often than not grabbed by the wrist and dragged from one place to another in this drama. Or if they’re white women they’re sexualized and basically made into accessories (or put on a pedestal), which is something else I’ve gotten used to in Korean dramas and movies. Kind of like how one gets used to see minorities in American films get constantly type cast. In both instances, I’m used to it but it still bothers me and my being used to it doesn’t justify it’s existence. Read more »

Hong Gil Dong is AWEsome

Posted in Drama, Seoul with tags , , on March 18, 2008 by illdielaughing

Just… watch it.

honggildong.jpg

This drama is based on the fictional, The Story of Hong Gil Dong written in the 16th or 17th century by Heo Gyun. It’s about a Robin Hood-like character that robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. In the series though Hong Gil Dong kind of falls into his infamy rather than directly choosing that path. Gil Dong, played by Kang Ji Hwan, the bastard child of a minister is a guy that just wants to go off to China, but his fate has something more in store. He meets Heo Yi Nok (Sung Yuri), a depressingly stupid girl with a good heart, Chang Hui (Jang Geun Suk) a dark figure with an interesting past but an even more interesting mission and a group of interesting bandits.

…The Series…

The Good:
THE ACTING
1. Kang Ji Hwan. I love this guy. His acting is great and he’s adorably hot. What more could one ask for?
2. Sung Yuri’s acting isn’t amazing and in fact it’s contrived sometimes but she makes the character she portrays bearable. Also, as an actress she retrieves herself from the mess she was before.
3. The supporting cast is amazing. First the bandits: Cha Hyun Jung plays Mal Nyeo the feisty female, Park Sang Wook plays Su Keon the wanna-be ladykiller and the adorable Maeng Se Chang plays as the adorable Gomi.
4. Jang Geun Suk, I find the coldness and steeliness of his countenance interesting and appealing. For me it makes his character more believable, it just make so much sense that he would be like that.
THE HONG SISTERS
The characters that they created are so complex and great. Even the bad guys you understand, you see the dark sides of the good characters. I’m on episode 18 of 24 of the series and I still don’t know where the heart of some of the leads are. It’s great to be able to keep guessing and not have to resign to predictability. And the series is just well written. I’m still interested! And I’m so picky about dramas. (I literally only watched the first and last episode of My Girl because I didn’t want to waste 16 hours of my life, but since learning that it was also written by the Hong sisters, I might go back and give it a chance.)

The not so good:
1. Meong Cheong Yi AKA Yi Nok’s persistent stupidity. I understand it’s her character but seriously, she’s dumb to the point of handicap sometimes. She has a good and loyal heart though but I’m sick of the dumb-yet-good-hearted-female character in dramas.
2. This is just a general thing I hate about dramas but I wish that people would stop talking to themselves and stating the obvious. I understand that some viewers are slow but seriously, they’re not as slow as Yi Nok.

In the end watch this drama because it’s quickly becoming one of the best dramas I’ve seen. It’s nowhere near perfect (I find dramas in general can lose some of the, well, drama) but it’s exciting, the acting is good, the characters aren’t simple and even though we know from the beginning who is going to end up with who, there is so much that we don’t know that makes watching this drama worth while.

Gokusen 3

… なぜよ?!

gokusen.jpg

Why oh why? I couldn’t finish the first season of Gokusen. Mostly because the same thing happened every. single. episode. I’m sure someone else besides me noticed right? I know there are tons of Gokusen lovers out there, and I understand why. The episodes that I could get through were hilarious….but I need more than that for me to enjoy and finish watching 9 hours of a drama.

Nakama Yukie  is coming back again as the homeroom teacher, Yankumi. The boys from 3D include idol stars Nakama Junta  and Kiriyama Akita  of B.A.D., Takaki Yuya  of Hey! Say! Jump (playing the male lead) and Huruma Miura  , Miura Shohei and Ishiguro Hideo .

The third season of the drama starts in April of this year.

Soulmate’s OST

Posted in Drama, Seoul, TV, ^_^ on December 18, 2007 by illdielaughing

So I just posted about the great Korean drama Soulmate but I completely forgot to talk about the amazing OST that accompanies the drama.soulmate12.jpg They have such great music that perfectly match the moments in the show. And it’s not that sappy piano music crap (well, there is a bit of that) but it’s mostly great songs from Nouvelle Vague, Sia, Lasse Lindh and tons of other people I had never heard of until I watched this drama. Hop on over to Dramabeans (who also loved the drama), and check out the music from this drama.  soul_8016.jpg   Songs to Download1. In a Manner of Speaking- Nouvelle Vague2. Where I Belong- Sia3. Soulmate

Just finished watching this drama and I am so glad I saw this one to the end. I had been putting it off for a while because I was sick of romance dramas with no substance or wit and obnoxiously stupid love triangles. But this drama was funny and sweet and Shin Dong Wook is really hot. Haha.

photo17912.jpg
From the bottom girl, clockwise: Soo Kyung, Dong Wook, Phillip, Min Ae, Ryohei, Yu Jin. (The pic got cut off!)

The drama is about two people who are meant to be together, Dong Wook and Soo Kyung. Bn the beginning, Dong Wook is a player starting a relationship with  Soo Kyung’s coworker Yu Jin and Soo Kyung is engaged to her boyfriend of five years, Phillip (he’s Korean). Phillip begins to feel an attraction to Yu Jin’s cousin and/or roommate the man killer, Min Ae who is also sort of seeing Dong Wook’s Japanese model friend Ryohei. Soo Kyung and Yu Jin’s boss, Mi Jin is obsessed with  Dong Wook’s best friend Jeong Hwan. Amazingly, amongst all of these connections the soul-mates Dong Wook and Soo Kyung have never met. And most of these people are unaware of the connections between them.

This funny and refreshing drama does more than just regurgitate old romance drama cliches but it suggests new ideas about love, relationships and whether or not fate and soul-mates exist. I liked it a lot and all of the performances were great. Except for Ryohei’s horrible performance, it was pretty bad, he was a model turned actor that became really popular in Korea so I assume that is why they used him for this minor role. But overall it was a great drama and I suggest watching it! Most of the cast kept their own names, similar to sitcom style. In fact, MBC advertised Soulmate as a sitcom that would show two half-hour episodes in a row everyweek.

Shin Dong Wook as Dong-wook
Lee Soo Kyung as Soo-kyung
Choi Phillip as Phillip
Sa-gang as Yu-jin
Otani Ryohei as Ryo Hei
Jang-mi In-ae as Min-ae
Jeong-hwan as Jung Hwan
Kim Mi-jin as Mi-jin

Lobbyist: The Antithesis of Ma Wang

Lobbyist/angel

The upcoming K-drama Angel is changing it’s name to…drumroll please….Lobbyist. Why? Because it makes so much more sense, seeing as the drama is about lobbyists.
I’m happy they changed from Angel to Lobbyist because, if you look at the poster it’s the same setup as the poster for awesome k-drama Ma Wang. (Ma Wang is Korean for devil). Devil… Angel… okay.

mawang
I personally think this one is better. But it is interesting to see such similar poster for two dramas from the same year.

Lobbyist starts in October. There is alot of hype surrounding this drama. I’m pretty excited, it sounds new and interesting. Hopefully by then the name will still be Lobbyist because that makes much more sense.
