Joo Jin-mo and Jo In-seong’s “A Frozen Flower”

Being called Korea’s Brokeback Mountain because like Brokeback it is a period piece about two gay men.

 (fanmade)

But I’m sure A Frozen Flower will be nothing remotely like Brokeback and I think it small-minded (not in the negative sense) to parallel this movie to Brokeback. Though I know it’s easier for human beings to comprehend things through comparison it does a disservice to an original work (or even an adaptation) to constantly judge it as an allusion to a former.

More bothering to me is that Jo In Seong and Joo Jin Mo’s acting is being referred to “homosexual acting”, specifically in an empas article I read. So, now there’s acting and then there’s “homosexual acting”? I find that absolutely absurd. I understand that the world isn’t as “live and let live” as I am but it seems absurd to think that you channel something else when you portray a gay character.

Jo In Seong reunites with A Dirty Carnival director, Yoo Ha, in what is being called a “big budget” historical epic. I have no doubt the movie will be a period piece but their $10 million budget is silly cheap for a period piece made in Hollywood, so I’m having a hard time relating that to big budget. Anyway, the movie is set in the last days of the Koryo Dynasty (918-1392, followed by the Joseon dynasty, which every other Korean period piece movie is set in, more or less) and is based on the true story of a King, played by Joo Jin Mo, who falls in love with one of his bodyguards, Jo In Seong. Considering that the Royal Guard at the time were all hand picked, good-looking young men, that was meant or bound to happen.

I’m interested in the movie because I think them both capable actors and I think Joo Jin Mo really hot. ^_^

Bwaha…so true!! Gay men have been around since the dawn of time (well….the dawn of civilization) and I’m excited to see how Korea is slowly becoming more open to gays. This is untrue of older generations but I feel like the younger generations are getting quite open minded about the idea of homosexuality.
