The Two Faces of My Girlfriend
Just watched this movie last night and like most Korean romantic comedies that I’ve seen it’s funny, has random animation and a hokey underdeveloped plot. But what this movie has going for it is two good actors (Jung Ryu Won and Bong Tae Gyu), the fact that it’s really funny and that it has some real heart.
In Two Faces of My Girlfriend Gu Chang finds a wallet in his cafeteria. Starving and broke he looks through the wallet hoping to find money. In it he finds a picture of a guy and girl as well as the money he so needs. He cackles and shuffles to the cafeteria to eat some food. While eating, in runs An Ni, looking for her wallet. Gu Chang recognizes her face from the picture and tries to avoid her. He runs into his friends and in a loud voice he says, “Oh I found this wallet (nervous laugh)…” An Ni sees him and says it’s hers. He returns it and makes his get away but An Ni comes after him asking not about the 3 dollars he took but about the picture, which she can’t find. They end up eating fishcakes together and become friends. The next day they hang out again and at the end of the day An Ni reveals that it is actually her birthday. In response Gu Chang and his 3 friends through a party for her in one of their rooms. They all get drunk but none as drunk as An Ni who says, “My heart’s been broken before… who wants to be my boyfriend and help me heal it?” (or something to that affect). All hands shoot up but of course our main man gets the privilege. An Ni then passes out.
For some reason this signals to Gu Chang friends that he now needs a condom (that is ridiculous, and slightly disturbing, no?) Gu Chang, who hasn’t kissed a girl let alone slept with one is dismayed. Of course, our main guy is chivalrous and does nothing. He puts An Ni on the bed and goes to sleep on a chair. Unfortunately he is woken up by Ha Ni, An Ni’s alter ego. She basically beats him to a pulp and makes him stand on his head after finding the condom and thinking that he has “taken her flower”.
Thus begins the tug-of-war between, Gu Chang, An Ni and Ha Ni.
This movie is more worth seeing than Some Like it Hot and it is most definitely because of Jung Ryu Won. She is great as the split personality An Ni. Her body language, the deepness of her voice, the way she speaks completely changes, it’s great.
So watch this, Jung Ryu Won is a pleasure to watch (she can actually act!) and Bong Tae Gyu will keep you in stitches.
