My Sassy Girl’s…

…slow American cousin, the remake, My Sassy Girl. The trailer has been leaked and the film looks… well it’s prettier than the first one, but the content and the characters are worse. It maintains a lot of the plot points in the original film, (the rose in class, the tree, the drunk train station meeting etc.) but it deviates in someways (the female lead seems even more insufferable than Korea’s version and the male lead seems to be no where near as amiable).

I enjoyed the original My Sassy Girl alot, but it had everything to do with Cha Tae Hyun and nothing to do with Jeon Ji Hyun. In fact, by the middle of the film I found her character ridiculous and annoying, but the way the film ended made up for that. Anyway, I think that My Sassy GirlĀ  is a good movie, so it’s unfortunate that the first exposure most westerners will have to this plot will be through what looks to be a bad Hollywood remake. I think that if the movie was better, better stars would have been attached to it, because everyone likes a good romantic comedy. I hope for the best of this film, because I would love for it to do justice to the original. Whether or not it is good I think that this movie will open westerners up to the Korean original.

This is random but it’s really pissing me off all the people that are arguing that Hollywood is stupid for remaking this and that Hollywood has no originality etc. etc. While I do think that the originality in Hollywood is minimal I think that it’s the same thing for Bollywood, and it’s the same thing for Chungmoro, and movie making capitals around the world. People are too quick to generalize based on their own emotional attachment to films.

  1. “everyone likes a good romantic comedy”

*raises hand excitedly* …….personally I have no expectations. I think that’s the best way to go with this remake.

  2. well it seems like they really tried to recreate the movie– down to exact scenes and stuff BUT the actors just dont have the chemistry or the talent. I think if they had found better actors more with the spunk of Jeon JiHyun and endearing goofiness of Cha TaeHyun it woulda worked. I’m gonna see it and give it a fair shot. There’s plenty of American remakes I have liked better than the original Asian production so we’ll see.
