Kaba Modern says “Good Bye”

Posted in WTF? with tags on March 21, 2008 by illdielaughing

America voted Status Quo as the number one group. Status Quo? Really?

eliminated_kaba_modern.jpg

So Kaba Modern and Jabbawockeez had to go up against each other. I really wanted them to be the last two groups because they are the best two groups on the show but not with Status Quo on top. I’m sooooo sad. Status Quo did not deserve to be in the top spot and they don’t deserve to go up against JabbawokeeZ in the finale. Status Quo is obviously going to lose. I’m so pissed. I really wanted it to be Kaba and Jabba in the end because they really are the two best groups on the show. Screw You, America. I’m kidding, but seriously America’s voting is messed up, George Bush (twice) and now Status Quo? jeez. Status Quo does have great stunts but their choreography is sub-par and not executed anywhere near as well as Kaba or Jabba. I would have been able to deal better with Kaba losing to Jabba in the finale but to have crew like Status Quo outlive them? Such a shame.

I loved what Mike said when they got voted off, “We just wanted to inspire…” And they did.

On the good side of things their careers are pretty much set because they are all amazing dancers. Mike, Jia, Tony, Lawrence, Yuri, Cindy congrats on getting this far and please do great things!

Happy Birthday, Kang Ji Hwan

Since watching Hong Gil Dong I have started to adore Kang Ji Hwan. (Who doesn’t like a good, attractive actor?) And today is his birthday so to Kang Ji Hwan I say Happy Birthday!

My friend has told me that Kang Ji Hwan’s drama Capital Scandal is a must see so I’m really looking forward to watching that. A drama of his that I’m not interested in seeing is the drama starring Kim Ha Neul (currently in On Air) in which they are first cousins in love with each other. Two things I can’t deal with in a relationship are incest and pedophilia.

Anyway, I wonder why Kang Ji Hwan was the only person dressed in his Hong Gil Dong costume. A bit attached are we?

Jun Ji Hyun’s a Vamp for Hollywood

Posted in Movies with tags , on March 20, 2008 by illdielaughing

lastvamp-bts.jpg

Jun Ji Hyun’s hollywood debut is a remake of the anime Blood: The Last Vampire. Everyone is calling this Jun Ji Hyun’s big U.S. Hollywood, but there is still no word on a release date in the U.S. and as of yet there doesn’t seem to be a U.S. distributor tied to the film. The film opens in France in July, this is known because Pathé is a big financier of the film (somehow connected to the director being French?). Release dates for the rest of Europe and Asia are speculated to be in the late Summer/Early Fall. Still no word on U.S. release though. Will Jun Ji Hyun’s big debut be a disappointment or even exist at all?

This marks another stereotypical role for an Asian actor and another Korean actor playing a Japanese ninja (like person) but the movie does sound interesting. Blood: The Last Vampire is about a girl named Saya, apart of a secret vampire fighting sect of the government, trying to defeat vampires that have infiltrated a U.S. Air Force Base the day before the beginning of the Vietnam War.

The trailer for the anime released in 2000.

Pics and more ramblings after the jump.

Hong Gil Dong is (still) AWEsome

Posted in Seoul, ^_^ with tags , on March 19, 2008 by illdielaughing

Just watched episode 19 and 20. This. Show. Is. Intense

yinok.png Almost as intense as this picture is gianormous. Click the pic!

Sung Yuri was on my “good” list for the show and she has definitely kept her strong acting going. She actually gets even better. I am prone to like the strong female characters in shows and after learning the truth about her past she does such a good job at conveying the conflicting emotions that she’s feeling. I also like that her stupidity is no longer a punch line. Well, it is in 19 a bit (and it’s really funny) but in 20 her slowness serves as a way to remind the audience of what the heck is going on. (Though, we don’t really need the freaking reminder).

The Good is still good in this show but Jang Geun Suk’s constant staring off into space and glaring at nothing as he talks to the people behind him is pissing me off. The only thing that stop me from being completely distracted and perturbed by this is when he talks to Yi Nok (or anyone for that matter) straight on and you see him connecting with someone. And when he cries! Aww…

SPOILERS BELOW!!!! If you don’t want spoilers refer to my other Gil Dong lovin’ post. (It’s 2 below this one :) )

Bae Young Joon- Serious Voice Actor

Posted in Seoul with tags on March 18, 2008 by illdielaughing
wintersonata.jpg

Bae Young Joon has become a household name in Korea and Japan after starring in the drama Winter Sonata. Last december the news came out that Winter Sonata would be made into an anime, which will be a joint Korean and Japanese production. Not only will Bae Young Joon be reprising his role as Kang Joon Sang, doing the voice for the anime, but he is also helping produce the series. The anime adaptation will also appear in theaters which is interesting because the aesthetic of television and theatrical films are very different and I’m just wondering how they will reconcile those differences.

I haven’t watched Winter Sonata but it’s a really romantic story about two lovers that are separated for ten years and meet each other again at one’s wedding. It’ll be interesting to see such a romantic story translated to anime. I wonder how it will look.

Hong Gil Dong is AWEsome

Posted in Drama, Seoul with tags , , on March 18, 2008 by illdielaughing

Just… watch it.

honggildong.jpg

This drama is based on the fictional, The Story of Hong Gil Dong written in the 16th or 17th century by Heo Gyun. It’s about a Robin Hood-like character that robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. In the series though Hong Gil Dong kind of falls into his infamy rather than directly choosing that path. Gil Dong, played by Kang Ji Hwan, the bastard child of a minister is a guy that just wants to go off to China, but his fate has something more in store. He meets Heo Yi Nok (Sung Yuri), a depressingly stupid girl with a good heart, Chang Hui (Jang Geun Suk) a dark figure with an interesting past but an even more interesting mission and a group of interesting bandits.

…The Series…

The Good:
THE ACTING
1. Kang Ji Hwan. I love this guy. His acting is great and he’s adorably hot. What more could one ask for?
2. Sung Yuri’s acting isn’t amazing and in fact it’s contrived sometimes but she makes the character she portrays bearable. Also, as an actress she retrieves herself from the mess she was before.
3. The supporting cast is amazing. First the bandits: Cha Hyun Jung plays Mal Nyeo the feisty female, Park Sang Wook plays Su Keon the wanna-be ladykiller and the adorable Maeng Se Chang plays as the adorable Gomi.
4. Jang Geun Suk, I find the coldness and steeliness of his countenance interesting and appealing. For me it makes his character more believable, it just make so much sense that he would be like that.
THE HONG SISTERS
The characters that they created are so complex and great. Even the bad guys you understand, you see the dark sides of the good characters. I’m on episode 18 of 24 of the series and I still don’t know where the heart of some of the leads are. It’s great to be able to keep guessing and not have to resign to predictability. And the series is just well written. I’m still interested! And I’m so picky about dramas. (I literally only watched the first and last episode of My Girl because I didn’t want to waste 16 hours of my life, but since learning that it was also written by the Hong sisters, I might go back and give it a chance.)

The not so good:
1. Meong Cheong Yi AKA Yi Nok’s persistent stupidity. I understand it’s her character but seriously, she’s dumb to the point of handicap sometimes. She has a good and loyal heart though but I’m sick of the dumb-yet-good-hearted-female character in dramas.
2. This is just a general thing I hate about dramas but I wish that people would stop talking to themselves and stating the obvious. I understand that some viewers are slow but seriously, they’re not as slow as Yi Nok.

In the end watch this drama because it’s quickly becoming one of the best dramas I’ve seen. It’s nowhere near perfect (I find dramas in general can lose some of the, well, drama) but it’s exciting, the acting is good, the characters aren’t simple and even though we know from the beginning who is going to end up with who, there is so much that we don’t know that makes watching this drama worth while.

Vin Diesel and Michelle Yeoh in “Babylon AD”

Posted in Movies on March 18, 2008 by illdielaughing

Babylon A.D. is the story of a man that has to transport a woman from Russia to China..A women that happens to have a bunch of crazies running after her because she has an organism inside of her that they want to make into a messiah. What. The. Hell.

Behind the scenes stuff.

DMX in the background? Um, why?  Anyway, it looks intense…but ridiculous.

Girl’s Generation Tae Yeon can Sing

Posted in Music, Seoul with tags on March 16, 2008 by illdielaughing

I am not a fan of Girl’s Generation but after hearing this song from the Hong Gil Dong Soundtrack I have new appreciation for one of the member’s voice. Sweet song, nice lyrics, and she seems to control her voice pretty well.

The song starts about 1 minute into the video.

Gummy on Music Bank

Watch Gummy and TOP on Music Bank performing “I’m Sorry”. The singing is great. TOP’s rapping dances/antics always make me laugh. The dancing can just cease to exist. And I wish Gummy rethought the shirt she’s wearing. But besides that, this song is growing on me, I love the timbre and tone of Gummy’s voice.

G-Dragon Feels the Bitter Sting of Rejection?

Posted in Seoul with tags , on March 16, 2008 by illdielaughing

son-ga-in.png

On a recent episode of Star Golden Bell Son Ga In of Brown Eyed Girls mentioned a young singer that asked her out but whom, according to her, she rejected because they were both singers.  After some usual MC badgering they guessed that that it was G-Dragon. This made Ga In very embarrassed.  And it sounded as if she said yes.

There was in fact a young celebrity that asked Son Ga In out but when the MC’s on Star Golden Bell asked her if it was G-Dragon she wanted to say “I can’t say.” But they cut her off before she could finish so it sounded as if she were beginning to say yes.

But since she got so embarrassed about it.
