Jun Ji Hyun’s a Vamp for Hollywood

Jun Ji Hyun’s hollywood debut is a remake of the anime Blood: The Last Vampire. Everyone is calling this Jun Ji Hyun’s big U.S. Hollywood, but there is still no word on a release date in the U.S. and as of yet there doesn’t seem to be a U.S. distributor tied to the film. The film opens in France in July, this is known because Pathé is a big financier of the film (somehow connected to the director being French?). Release dates for the rest of Europe and Asia are speculated to be in the late Summer/Early Fall. Still no word on U.S. release though. Will Jun Ji Hyun’s big debut be a disappointment or even exist at all?

This marks another stereotypical role for an Asian actor and another Korean actor playing a Japanese ninja (like person) but the movie does sound interesting. Blood: The Last Vampire is about a girl named Saya, apart of a secret vampire fighting sect of the government, trying to defeat vampires that have infiltrated a U.S. Air Force Base the day before the beginning of the Vietnam War.

The trailer for the anime released in 2000.

Pics and more ramblings after the jump.

Jun Ji Hyun–who is to be known as Gianna Jun in the U.S.–will be playing the lead role of Saya. There have been a few complaints about the image of Jun Ji Hyun as Saya because unlike Jun Ji Hyun the anime’s Saya was muscular, a bit chubby and not as pretty as Jun Ji Hyun. Well, I’m usually the one that says that remakes–unless you are purposefully trying to redo every single aspect of the film–are to be seen as independent works. Also in this movie, I believe playing Saya’s mother, is Kimi Wa Petto’s Koyuki. From looking at pictures of production the movie looks interesting. The locations are nice, I’m hoping there’s not too much green screen and I hoping that Ji Hyun’s English is better than, say, Daniel Henney’s Korean.

But I got my hands on some pics of the production and something that looks somewhat like a promotional pic. Some of the pictures were too big to thumbnail so just click the link. Enjoy!

  1. to be honest, i’m not holding my breath for a big debut….pretty much how i feel for any of the “debuting” asian entertainers….maybe i’m just cynical but i haven’t seen anything that has persuaded me that anyone will hit it big…….yet. but with that said, i do wish her and anyone else breaking into the US the best! i would love to be proved wrong. :)

Same, I’m not holding my breath for this either. But I would love for the movie to be good but I have an overwhelming feeling that it won’t be good. Too many rumors and too much hype for me to get excited for another “debut” but as you said, let’s hope to be proven wrong concerning any of these debutantes.

  3. Completely unrelated but I just finished watching ABDC.

Sigh, Kaba Modern is no more. I had a vibe….anyhow, I guess this means we’ll probably both be cheering for JabbawockeeZ in the finals next week? Then again, maybe Status Quo won you over….

    Akon…
I read your comment before I finished watching the episode. I ended up watching the rerun (which is airing as I write this). I literally let out a cry of agony. Thanks for spoiling it. Lol I’m completely kidding.
I’m posting about this by the way.
