Performances From the SBS Music Awards
SBS Muic Awards were last night in Seoul. Here are some of my favorite performances…
TOP FOUR
Starting off with the YG family: Big Bang, 1tym, Jinusean, Se7en (off in a corner), and new YG artist, CL
Teddy of 1tym and his raccoon hat, Tae Yang almost being too sexy for his shirt, T.O.P. and the shades, G-Dragon’s bowl cut, and Se7en is back on the scene for a bit before he comes back to the states after New Years. All things when thrown together make a suprisingly great performance. This was a really nice performance, and YG’s new artist CL (the girl rapping) is awesome.
MC Mong & Haha (aka dumb and dumber) and Nuoliunce & Defconn
Haha’s strut near the beginning of the performance is like a penguins waddle. I love these guys! The reggae covers and what not… I feel like they smoked a bunch of weed and then came out. I mean that in a good way…
Clazziquai, Cherry Filter and Rumble Fish
I love these guys. They’re great artists and great performers. I was really surprised at how butchered Horan’s hair looked, I could hardly recognize her. Never listened to Cherry Filter and Rumble Fish, but their lead singers rock (even though Cherry Filter’s singer can ease up on the yelling and shrieking). I love listening to good singers performing live.
DANCE PERFORMANCE: The Grace, Seo In-Young, Chae Yeon and Lee Min Woo
Stephanie has got some PIPES. (I’m not really a fan of The Grace but I know all of the girls are really talented. It’s sad they got recycled but hopefully The Grace will last for a while.) But Stephanie is, as Tyra would say, fierce, she is such a great performer. Never been a fan of the sexy divas with the less than in impressive vocals, Seo In Young and Chae Yeon. I didn’t think Seo In Young’s solo performance was that impressive. Chae Yeon’s had a cool concept but it didn’t get me pumped (not even the mammoth boots). Lee Min Woo…. boy, can this guy dance. He, by himself, was more exciting than the two preceding performances.
They basically used other people’s songs while they were dancing (Except for M, I believe), which is kind of wierd because it was a bit too High School Talent Show. But the whole thing started (Stephanie, The Grace) and ended well (Lee Min Woo). One last thing, Stephanie should not dance next to Chae Yeon and In Seo Young again, I mean the latter can dance but Stephanie can dance. Catch my drift?
_______________________________________________________
To be honest I was a bit dissappoinated by the performances. I’m one of those people that expects great performances (like any other job). I’m not one of those people that will convince myself that a performer did really well just because I like or LOVE them. I want to get really excited about live music again because there are so many lipsyching, mediocre blobs floating around. Singers! Give us your greatness!

I thought CL was trying too hard to sound like an American female rapper. That bugged me. That and the fact that she’s a tiny girl surrounded by a bunch of dudes and dressed in god knows and wearing sunglasses indoors blah blah blah just makes me think she’s trying too hard. I thought YG was way past the SUPER SUPER thugged out hip hop artist look?

Yeah, I see what you mean, I’m wary about that with all of YG’s artists. When T.O.P. came out with the towel and they were flashing banners all over the place I shook my head in disappointment. CL though, I was just so relieved the girl could actually rap.I’m interested in seeing what she can do. But I get you, I think that in Korean music sometimes, when it comes to genres that originated in the states, there is an half-assed imitation thing that goes on and doesn’t work very well.

She can rap, which is a good thing, but I was rewatching the perf and she says “Down, down” and it becomes “Deyown, deyown” and it kills me because UGH stop trying to sound like you’re an American rapper with an accent that DOESN’T exist in Korea! Just rap with your own voice, I know you can do it! And she’s wearing Rocawear. Mmmmgh.
& agreed about the TOP flag thing. It says YG, but I seriously thought it was some gang symbol -_-;

hahaha YG is just so overly ghetto sometimes…
I didn’t know the flag said YG I was so confused. It saying YG on it makes it even more unneccessary.

I loved YG’s performance. Best one of the night, in my opinion.
Even though I don’t think CL was perfect, it’s obvious she has potential. I’m curious now!

you all forget that Yang Goon was a member of Taiji And The Boys. They were the foundation for Korean Hip-Hop. Seo Taiji in himself is one of the main pioneers of newer music genres to Korea. Without people like Seo Taiji and Yang Goon, korean music or “kpop” would not be what it is today. You have to respect that YG Family was founded on hip hop and that’s what they’ll stay true to. Their popularity came with the likes of 1tym, jinusean, perry, and others. All of which are hip-hop styled. It’s what makes them who they are today. I for one think it’s interesting to see their difference from other record labels, who are all pretty similar, throwing out pop groups left and right. They uphold the hip-hop and r&b genre in mainstream korean music, they are unique, that’s what makes them unique. They are performing to fit the image of the culture, which is hip-hop culture.

the dance performance…they should have just made Stephanie and Lee Min Woo do a dance together or something cuz Seo In Young and Chae Yeon …… um, they need more energy =/

[...] worry about is if they’ll be original and likable. We know CL can rap from seeing her at the SBS Music awards. Park Bom can sing. She has a really strong voice and she writes and produces some of her [...]
