Song Hye Gyo debuts in US…through Indie poo?

Sorry for the slightly crude heading.

I hope that Song Hye Gyo’s debut will be impressive. We’ll see though. There are a couple of things going against her, she hasn’t fully learned English and she’s going to be in an indie film by an unknown director. Of course, there are always those break outs that make a big splash in that obscure fim that screened at that random film festival but…after seeing Hwang Jini I’m not to sure Song has it anymore.

The movie, named Fetish will star Song and be directed by Son Su Beom. I’m interesting to learning about the plot of the film because of it’s title and also because 80% of Song’s lines will be in English. Who is this character she is playing? I wonder.

Apparently, the casting director, Susan Shopmaker, liked Song’s beauty in Hwang Jini as well as her Asian yet western image so she casted her… That just solidifies the image of the Western world being too narrow minded to accept some who has an Asian and solely Asian image (whatever the hell that means). I mean, I don’t even know what “Asian yet Western image” means. I’m sure that Shopmaker thought that the American public, if they had to see an Asian lead in a film, would accept someone who was as “American” as them. So silly. Why must everyone feel the need to comform to the West? I think that great thing about America is that we are so full of different people; so to cast someone in a film (especially one directed by a Korean director) because they seem “western” is insulting to Asians and to me as an American because it is assumed that I won’t appreciate something unless it is westernized. But there are always the people we love like Jackie Chan and Jet Li who have made it in the states but only in the types of films that Hollywood loves to cast Asians in, action films.

*drinks water* Digression ends

Now I’m done with my tyrade on westernization. If you want more on this topic please read on eyelid surgery. (Just kidding, don’t depress yourself).

Final Word:

Good luck to Song Hye Gyo, I really like her (not in Hwang Jini) and I can’t wait to see her in a mostly English film. But she certainly won’t make as much of a splash as Rain will in Speed Racer. Speaking of which, I am so excited. Emile Hersch, the Coen Brothers and Rain, OH MY!
