Behind the Scenes: Red Cliff

Tony Leung is set to star in the new John Woo film, Red Cliff.

Sounds intense. And that look from Tony equally intense. Moving on, Red Cliff is based on the Battle of Red Cliff that occured during the Three Kingdoms period in China. It takes place in the land of Wu which is invaded by Cao Cao and his army of a million men. Sun Quan is the leader of Wu and his army is horribly outnumbered even with the assisstance of Liu Bei’s (a rival landlord) army for help. But along comes our protagonist Zhou Yu (Tony Leung) who shows them how to defeat Cao Cao’s army by exploiting their weakness: their ill experience with fighting on water. Since this based on an historical event I’m not going to harp on the uninventiveness of the story line becase history does repeat itself. I also won’t harp because I love Tony Leung and John Woo (especially after seeing Hard Boiled).

Is it just me or has John Woo not changed in the past 25 years? That isn’t a rhetorical question.
