Plastic… yay or nay?

(Courtesy of: barbie_japan.com)
I really don’t like Dr. Phil. But… I watched his show today because it was discussing a topic that I find really interesting. Plastic surgery. I think that getting plastic surgery is a personal decision and all that good stuff but what I hate about it is that someone actually wants to do it. For example, a breast enlargement. I can safely say, for the most part, women who get a breast enhancement surgery get it because they feel like they have to live up to this perception of what a woman should look like. I think it’s BS. Some women look great with a flat chest and some women look great with average sized breasts and some women look great with Double D’s. Keira Knightley for example is very flat but she looks great. And Han Chae Young is fine with her big chest.

(movie-gazette.com)
The other thing that bothers me is people with dark skin that try to make themselves lighter because they get this perception that dark skin is bad and light skin is beautiful. Or people thinking that being tan makes you more beautiful. My personal opinion? It’s all about skin tone, there is such a thing as bad skin but it’s not in terms of light or dark, it’s tone. Some people are paler than paper but they look fine. Example? Dita Von Teese.
![]()
And then there are people who are dark as night but still are very attractive. Like, Djimon Hansou.
![]()
And then there is this misconception that being a fair-skinned Asian person is better than having darker skin. Asian men or women that are tan look as good as Asian people with fair skin. Compare Lee Hyo Ri and Song Hye Gyo.

(Cosmopolitan)
Both Gorgeous.
And don’t forget about the tan, hottie Gong Yoo.

And an example of someone getting there skin lightened with horrible affects? Michael Jackson

(Hollyscoop.com)
And rhinoplasty, people with bumps with their noses getting it shaved off or people with flat nose “defining” it more by adding who-knows-what to their nose. Example of a bad nose job? See above picture.
Then the eye surgery, which has become more prevalent in the US with Asian American women. It has always been a leading surgery in Asia and that’s what bothers me. The fact that someone tells these people that they’re not good enough without a double eyelid. And alot of that is in the media. Actresses are made to get plastic surgery before their debut so that they can convey this impossible and absolutely fake image of what a woman should look like to the masses. But there are beautiful women who don’t have a double eyelid, beautiful women who naturally have the double eyelid and then there are ALOT of people who look scary with the fake double eyelid.
Check out this post about SHOO from SES
EDIT: Here’s a high school photo
This is Kim A Joong. Personally, I can’t stand her. She’s a mediocre actor and she has the fakest face I’ve seen in a while. This is a before and after picture. Wow. She got the eyes, nose and chin done. People say she’s prettier. I say she’s a different kind of ugly. But then again, I can understand a woman who feels like she couldn’t possibly achieve their dream without getting the surgery.

Yoon Eun Hye who doesn’t SEEM as if she’s had surgery and is gorgeous. (Word around the block is that she got her eyes done.)
Finally, the S and V.
S shaped bodies are curvy and V shaped faces have a pointy jawline. This leads me to why I don’t like Se7en in general as a human being. He was asked to draw his ideal woman and this simpleton drew what you see below.

(Courtesy of: Popseoul)
Why would he draw an S and then add a V to the top? Is that a human being? Are women supposed to try to be that? What a silly boy Se7en is.
I think that’s pretty interesting though. It shows the effect of that unachievable standard of beauty on a guy.
Anyway, before I end this venting session I have to clarify. I don’t think that it’s wrong to get plastic surgery but what I do think is wrong is this force, these people, the multi-use them that is telling people that they aren’t good enough. That to me is tragic. People have been made to feel inferior forever but in this media-driven society this feeling of being inferior is thrust upon us every single day 24/7. And with the development of plastic surgery not only can you tell people where they are supposedly “lacking”, you can tell them where they can get it “fixed” and for how much.

Koreans use weird symbols for the standard of beauty in both men and women. The label S, V, M, lines etc for perfect “shape.” It’s natural for humans to be attracted by appearance, but media usually takes it another level. And I wouldn’t pin Se7en down for that drawing.. you can’t really know a lot about him just by he says in public or for “show.”

yay my first comment!

LMAO at “Lee Hyori, whom I believe is a natural beauty…” lee hyori a natural beauty?? and you criticize kim ah joong for being plastic. please. lee hyori is AS plastic as kim ah joong. no. lee hyori is worse because kim ah joong doesn’t get crazy tans that make you wonder if she is korean or not. kim ah joong is at least proud of her skin color. lee hyori? nope. surgerized double eyelids, plastic nose, surgerized v-line face, AND fake tans. and although ah joong is a mediocre actress, hyori is a hopeless “singer/dancer”.
P.S. don’t get me wrong. I do think that darker-skinned asians are as beautiful as pale-skinned asians. HOWEVER, i think that all depends on whether that dark skin (or pale skin, for that matter) is REAL. even if it isn’t, that’s ok, but hey, keep it to an extent that it looks NATURALLY GOOD, right?
October 10, 2007 at 8:58 pm
o snap lee hyori isn’t natural… i will immediately correct that
but i can’t agree and say that Lee Hyori is worse… even if she is tan at least she doesn’t look like an alien
October 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
just FYI: I happen to know Hyo Lee’s older sister (high school buddy), and it cost approximately 1.7 million (in us dollars) to have HYO LEE look the way she is now… sux for people who don’t have the $$$$$$$$????
She’s totally opposite of natural. Especially trying to deny the breasts implants when obvious pictures are all over the web like ‘Koreanster.com’… what a shame.. at least don’t hide it…be proud of it.. if you can’t be proud of it…then don’t fix your face to a superficial barbie image and lie that you were born ‘perfectly’.
October 16, 2007 at 7:03 pm
i couldn’t agree more
November 15, 2007 at 9:36 am
uhh i never knew before that kim ah joong did plastic surgery..& that much?? totally different hoh!
hyori cost 1.7 million to be like now?? oh my!!! i thought she’s natural..

ehm… i’ve just being a fan of Korean pop idols. and.. one of my mate told me, several days ago, that it is a common to do a plastic surgery in Korea.. among Korean artist. such as Super Junior. and yes, i did check it out on several sites, and compared their picture before and after their surgery, or at least, after they become famous. and i think, most actress change their : eyes ( to look bigger and brighter), their chin ( to look less chubby) and their lips. i, myself, have a small eyes but with a – i think – beautiful eyelids. and i am chubby, and my nose is snubby too. i think, god created people to be beautiful in their own way. you’re only “ugly” if you think you are.

[...] out her “natural” beauty. I used to think she was a natural beauty as well but was corrected. So, I think it is slightly ironic that they are epitomizing her “natural beauty” and [...]

Plastic Surgery = Stupid.
People who get Plastic Surgery = Stupid.
and btw, i think America is setting the standard for
many countries to think that Plastic Surgery is the “new” thing…
How ridiculous…
January 19, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Hyori is (pretty much) natural. If you look at her pics from when she was a lil kid she looks the same but older… She admitted to having her eyes done and really that’s the only major difference i can see!
Its so easy for us to say ‘her beauty is manufactured’ it makes us feel good about being natural but believe it or not there are a few people who are naturally the way they are.
As for plastic surgery– I usually think it’s pointless and contributes to society’s ridiculous beauty standards– because now, if you’re not born with it you can buy it. But on the other hand, there are some people who are truly self concious about their looks and if altering themselves truly improves their quality of life then go for it! You only live once, do what it takes for you to enjoy this life while you can! But things like eyelid surgeries, jawline shaving, and nose bridge implants, are somethings that will never ever make sense to me because these surgeries aren’t to ‘cure’ specific personal traits that people find wrong with themselves but these are surgeries to ‘cure’ inherited ETHNIC TRAITS!! Its almost like Asians saying, we’re proud to be ethnically homogenous but we don’t like how our ethnic homogenity makes us look! If you have small eyes and a round face be proud of it! No one should be apologizing or compromising their ethnicity and how their ethnicity makes them look.
January 20, 2008 at 4:43 pm
oish! se7en ish a weirdo!
lolz jk jk he is still a hottie!
hhrmmmm . nay!
plastic should stay with the dolls
some korean people already looked “cute”
without the suergery!
goshers! see what happens when the pressure to look “pretty” really just makes you a freak of nature. just a walking talking breathing plastic doll. soo ooo sad!!! im asian tooooo….noo!!! stop you are bringing me shame! all of us *serious!

I used to neglect my boy friend due to my nose problem, I feel uncomfortable to face him directly but now I got cure with non- surgical nose treatment, yes now I can have good time with him…. Nice post to go.

I’ve seen a Korean movie which main theme is ” Woman should envy nothing but true love” English Title is “How to keep my love” by Kim Jang Eun. Such a great movie and such a great lesson….. I guess Korean women didn’t learn their lesson from the movie. Beauty fades but not true love, you will get old, you will have wringkles but true love would still be there… How can you say if a man loves you if he loves you with your plastic face…. If he loves you he’ll love you for who and what you are, you don’t need to change a thing…. Plastic Surgery has been a part of showbiz.. It’s their prerogative but I’m on the side of fans who prefer natural beauty…Being a celebrity should not come along with just being beautiful but with talent too….
It’s Anne from the Philippines
February 12, 2008 at 11:45 pm
BAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHA…. please stop saying Lee Hyori…. BAAAAHAHAHA! dayum, she sucks. may as well be looking at kim jung il.. (based on their similarly striking, horrifying features, not “talent” <– tee hee)
February 12, 2008 at 11:46 pm
ronery, theyre both so ronery. but, no one reary seems to reararize it.
February 12, 2008 at 11:47 pm
haha, i just got the “youre posting comments too quickly, slow down” page. must be the bad Karma associated with Lee Hyori…
February 13, 2008 at 12:16 am
Oh god…
March 18, 2008 at 2:25 am
actually i’ll admit that i got double eyelid surgery and i see nothing wrong with it..i do understand the idea of “you should love yourself for who you are” cause i used to think like that too, but i know people (swear-not me) who have been bullied and picked on all their lives cause of their looks so if a little plastic surgery can help heal that for them..why not?
on the other hand however, i also believe in plastic surgery to a certain extent cause there are MANY people who get way too much and look really like o.O
May 5, 2008 at 12:15 pm
sure they have to be careful with their fake nose!!!how can they stand doing so rest of their life???i really can’t understand them!!hmm…but they still gorgeous…
June 12, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Hyori and Song Hye Kyo are all natural and super GORGEOUS! Eun Hye is just fake and gross!
June 29, 2008 at 7:41 pm
I LOVE Yoon Eun Hye….she’s sooo pretty….hopefully she hasn’t had anything done with her but to be honest I think she has….the problem with surgery for me in east asian countries is that whenever I see an asian with double lided, big eyes and a nice nose, a nice chin I automatically think they’ve had surgery….which is ludicrous but I can’t help it. I have this friend who I’m really close with and has the prettiest eyes (the natural korean ones that are not chinky but more almond shaped) and she tells me she wants to get eye surgery. Whenever I think about it, it just makes me feel sad that she doesn’t think her eyes are pretty….
July 7, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Ironically, Hyori is fake, but looks exactly the same as in her yearbook photos? Hyori’s nose looks pretty natural to me. Kim Ah Joong however does not. It doesn’t mean she’s not pretty, it just doesn’t look real.
Hyori’s super tan was only for the photoshoot. She was always kinda tan. But nowadays, who doesn’t tan? It’s the 21st century, people.
July 7, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Also, I still don’t understand the stupidity and how gullible people are. In one biased article or comment, everybody seems to believe everything they say without any facts to back up.
“Eunhye is so ugly and fake!”
“OMG, EUNHYE HAD SURGERY!?!?!!1!!11 I use to lyk her. Ew. Shes fake now.”
Sheesh people, USE YER BRAIN. Does she look like she got surgery? -v-;
I can’t say I totally know if she had surgery or not, but goodness gracious… you people freak out on nothing. IMO, I think she’s natural.
August 24, 2008 at 3:09 am
hello all….
I believe plastic surgery should be use unless its nesesary for your decent look, not like a way of getting supposly **more beutifull** what i mean for ¨nesessary¨ its cause there people that have some burn or accident scars, and cant return to society looking like that, it will be dificult to get a job
or self apreciation.I have a respect for all kinds of way of thinking, still spending thousend of dolars (or any kind of money) just to be a certain way…its dificult to prosses in my head…people are dieing in some places of hunger and diseases….and this artist just want to look better that that other bitch…or that fellow….I think it will be more hot…a girl/guy that wants to let a paw in the world helping others that a superficial fake person.
Well that is my way of thinking…and besises Korean people are beautiful the way they are, i believe is a sexy race.
ohh other thing Im a latina..girl, and i see that some of korean girls artists try to look more latina type… (well still its my way of seeing it)
Cause of the V line face, and the S shape, Jennifer Lopez kind body, more juicy lips, the bigger shinner eyes and the tan skin….
(MESSAGE TO SEVEN If you desire a S body and V face get a latina girl, but dont put into media does kinds of ideas, girls will start thinking ¨IM not preatty enought¨ and get surgery, teen girls will think its the only way…of feeling complete and boys will like them more that way.)
I enfatize i love korean boys…and i think korean girls are beautifull the natural way they are…..dont need to change anything just actitude towars your selfs people….
Thanks for your time….
you all…
Kerly

You can buy beauty, but you can’t buy class.
Even when and if you look good, there is always one person who looks better than you do. There’s no point in crying yourself to sleep over that, especially when everyone gets older and loses their conventional “beauty” at some point. Yeah yeah, there are hot old people, and beauty varies depending on who you ask. Dark skin and light skin is pretty, yet fashion is largely a marketing game. Most things marketed as “beautiful” are relatively expensive, and therefore profitable. Want great skin? Buy make-up and cremes. Want to be skinny? Pay for a diet. Want the v-shape face? Get surgery! Trends change depending on profits— when food was more expensive and difficult to obtain, being fat was the common beauty ideal, and skinny girls were considered ugly and plain “twigs.” Trends change, so does beauty— a look at older beauty ideals will show you what’s hot today may very well be “ugly” tomorrow for the sake of profit.
Knowing this, we should cultivate beauty through our actions and beliefs— those never go out of style. People tend to notice beauty most of all when people act beautifully, not just look it.

I know you don’t like Kim and it’s ok, but if you’re gonna badmouth someone, you must be sure about what you’re saying, or showing, for example the photo before/after of Kim is a FAKE promoted by people without scruples just to hurt her image.
Get a real photo of Kim in her high, and you’re not going to see a lot of difference.

hyori lee is pretty much natural.
on a show[search it up, its easy to find] she got her breasts checked after a car accident and they are natural.
there was once that she was joking on a show and said she couldn’t do a
‘miss piggy’ cus her nose was plastic, media took that first half of the story and blew it up.
BUT. at the end of the show, she did the ‘miss piggy’ anyway which proves are nos eis natural.
miss piggy is when you kinda pull up your nose to a pig’s form, plastic noses can’t do that without like… coming off and bending wierd.
look at her high school photos, her eyes seem the same too
hyori is one of those people that SQUINTS her eyes purposely to get this defined look, lots of american celebs do that. squiting her eye chAnges the shape of her eye slightly [i squint too so i know] but that doesn’t mean she’s had surgery.
from looking at her, the only thing i can say is
the max hyori has done is probably
cut the two sides of her nose and sewn it closer together.
even that, i doubt she did tho.
May 6, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Hey you all.saying lee hyori is fake??
ha.ha. go browse some hyori pics when she was still a kid.
look exactly the same! u stupid!
u’re jealous of her!

I am a korean american. My mom told me that all korean celebrities are very much into plastic surgeries. She also said that about 80 of koreans are getting eyelid surgeries. Overall she thinks it is around 70% that koeans get plastic surgeries. My mom said none of the korean female celebrities are natural and that includes Kim Tae Hee whom got eyelid surgeries to remove fat and skin, a bit of nose job at the tip of her nose and she forehead implant…………….
My mom is glad she isn’t livng in korea because it is a very plastic world. People are force into plastic cuz of job compeition and also compeittion to get a mate. Everyone gets plastic there.
