Music I Love: The Gossip

Posted in Music, NYC with tags on May 17, 2009 by illdielaughing

gossip_heavycross

I’m very much into Gossip these days and not the bad kind. Gossip is an alternative rock band originating in Arkansas but finding most of it’s success in Europe.  Ever since watching “Skins” this past winter, whose 1st series theme was Gossip’s “Standing in the Way of Control”, I’ve been interested in Gossip’s releases. They’re next album, “Music for Men” is set for digital release in the United States on June 23rd. I’ll definitely be buying it but for now I’ve made do with the great single off of the upcoming album, “Heavy Cross”.

And the first single off of their last album, “Standing in the Way of Control”

Star Trek is Awesome

May it live long and prosper. I’m not a Trekkie. My mom is and I make fun of her for it, well that is until I watched Star Trek, the latest film, something of a reboot of the franchise, by J.J Abrams. First, I love J.J. Abrams, he takes sci-fi and situates into the realm of reality flawlessly (for the most part) and he never fails in creating emotional attachment between the viewer and the characters. Chris Pine as the new Captain Kirk is smexy and rugged, Zachary Quinto as Spock is awesome, Zoe Saldana as Uhura is gorgeous, John Cho as Sulu is the bomb and everyone Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana…GOLD. J.J as director makes my life worth living. Haha, an overstatement but this movie has restored my faith in the Hollywood blockbuster. (My faith had left completely after seeing the mess that was Wolverine).

Great acting, great direction, great music (though a tad overused), great special effects, great sound design, greats use of lens flares, of all things. Great movie. I’ll write a proper review when I’m not fangirling.

For now here’s a HILARIOUS interview with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and an uber Star Trek fan.

Is 2NE1 on Fire?

Posted in Music, Music Video with tags on May 6, 2009 by illdielaughing

Guess who’s back…back again… lol (that would be MOI) It’s summer so let’s see how long I can keep this up!

2ne1_20090505_seoulbeats

There’s definitely some smoke rising off of new girl group, 2NE1, but is their first digital single “Fire” hot?

It is a good summer song, the beat is interesting and the girls look like they’re having a lot of fun in the “Street MV”. However, the song is repetitive and the whole sound of it is underwhelming. The music video, on the other hand, is great, mostly because the girls look like they’re having a ton of fun and they can dance their butts off. As they move forward, though, someone should remove the crooked fitted and durag from Sandara’s head. That’s just ridiculous.

I also take serious issue with Park Bom looking like an overgrown baby in that onesy, Sandara wearing those baggy pink sweat pants and all of them, save CL, looking unfit to walk around in the real world.

My impression on the group, after seeing them in action, is CL is the bomb, Minji is fierce, Park Bom has finally got some spunk and Sandara Park is kind of useless. She’s not singing…but she’s not rapping… Darn, there’s always one person in the group that doesn’t really do anything. We’ll see, as time passes, whether or not these girls are a good group but I’m giving all of them the benefit of the doubt and hoping to see great things.

Watch the Street version of the “Fire MV”

Watch “Skins”!

I couldn’t help writing about this.

skins

Man, oh, man.

Series 1 trailer. I think embedding is disabled so check it out here

“Skins” is a British comedy-drama show about a bunch of teens in their last years of college (college in England is from 16-18). The show is sort of like Degrassi but raunchier, naughtier, more cursing, more sex, more parties, more drugs, less preachy and loads more fun. I only started watching it because I read that Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) was in it and I’m a teensy bit in love with that kid, mostly because he’s adorkable and looks like elmo. Anyway, so I watched the first 2 episodes of Series 1 (seasons = series in British English) and I was freaking hooked. So I watched series 1 and series 2 in five days and am so sad that the original cast has been switched out for series 3 which is airing now. I can’t watch series 3, it just won’t be the same without the same cast. Looking for other British shows to fill the void. Haha. Read more »

“I’m Finished”

Posted in ^_^ on March 2, 2009 by illdielaughing

I was going to keep the blog open, because I felt bad after realizing that people actually appreciate that it’s here. But it’s a pain in the ass, to be honest. I really am sick of being on the internet. Everyone on the internet is so friggin’ angry, and then it makes me angry, so I really must seperate myself from it. I’m not deleting NYCST and I’ll probably add to it when I go to Korea this summer. I’ll be the one with the fancams this time. Haha.

To everyone that agreed and disagreed with me with a semblance of sanity:
Thank you so much. You were the only redeeming thing about blogging.

To everyone that agreed or disagreed with me like an angry, illiterate 12 year-old on speed:
Seriously, Shut up. You make no sense. Grow a pair of balls and walk out into the sunshine every so often and touch another human being. A real one.

I have nothing interesting to say about anything anymore unless it’s face to face with another person that I know and who knows me. I’m actually a really nice person, but I’m also brutally honest so I guess the brutally honest part is the only thing that shows up online. And that can be, well, brutal.

You’ll still see me over at Seoulbeats and in SB weekly. I know most of you guys seem to hate Seoulbeats but since I know everyone behind it, I can say honestly that they’re good people, you may be shocked haha.

Well, it’s been fun, until the end.

Cheers.

Sohee embarrasses all of East Asia

Sohee performs Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” at Bangkok

Anything I say about this performance will be really mean. Not because I’m a mean person but because I’m an honest person and to talk about this performane honestly would be to bring up things that some would perceive as negative when it is the truth. So I’ll let you comment.

All I can say about that performance is. “Wow”.

Park Myung Soo makes a better woman

Watching the Infinity Challenge parody and I’m shocked! (As well as laughing my ass off). Park Myung Soo should stick to wigs and cross dressing because he looks much better that way. This parody is hilarious. I love these guys. Noh Hong Chul has perfected creepy.

Happy Birthday, Lupe Fiasco [The Cool]

lupe-fiasco

So, I really wanted to write a post about Lupe Fiasco’s latest Grammy nominated album The Cool but then I read that it’s his birthday so I’ll kill two birds with one stone.

For those who don’t know Lupe Fiasco he is a rapper and a pretty darn good one at that. The Cool is a great album and one of the best ones from 2008. He’s a great writer, he has great collabs with Matthew Santos, his beats are solid.  Songs like Gold Watch, Gotta Eat, The Coolest and Hip-Hop Saved My Life (featuring Nikki Jean) speak to the social critic in all of us. Songs like Paris, Tokyo and Go Baby (featuring Gemstones) are sweet talking mostly about love. He tells stories with his music, it’s not just a masturbatory album full of dance tracks with no substance.  All I can say is, give this album a listen, even if you don’t like rap or hip-hop.

Fave tracks, hard to choose but I love Superstar, Go Baby, Go Go Gadget Flow, The Coolest and Paris, Tokyo. I really can’t choose one.
